Looking at various utopias as a precedent, this studio was split into two design projects - designing a masterplan for a selected site, and designing typologies for this site. Using the neighbourhood of Parkdale, Toronto, the idea was to create a self-sustaining neighbourhood creating an urban green zone that would function as both a public green space and an urban market. Complementing this green zone would be three typologies that would allow this neighbourhood to be self-sustainable: live-work, work-grow, live-grow. The live-work typology would allow residents to use their talents and services to generate income. Additionally, the work-grow typology would provide employment and food to support the surrounding neighbourhood. Finally, the live-grow typology would allow residents to grow their own food in an urban dwelling.
